Commemoration of the Founding of the
Pueblo San Jose de Guadalupe
by East Los Streetscapers
The title of this 1997 artwork refers to the founding of San Jose in 1777 as a pioneer settlement and as California’s first civil
community. In that era San Jose supplied agricultural products to nearby missions in San Francisco and Monterey. Situated adjacent
to “Urban Rooms” in PARQUE DE LOS POBLADORES, its four concrete triangular columns are grouped closely, each topped with
a granite slab and bearing images carved on its exterior, along with a tile mural depicting the city’s pioneer history on its inner
face. At center of the pillars is a tile floor map tracing the original settlers’ journey from the Sonora desert to San Jose.
