OPENING LINES SOUTH BAY ACCENT
T emperatures are on the rise; time to banish the flannels and bring
on the flip-flops! Like a big, juicy peach, the delights of summer
in the South Bay are just waiting to be plucked and savored.
Reach for seasonal adventure in this issue’s special installment
of Summer Flings. The annual section opens with “Splish
Splash,” an enticing look at six scenic lakes in Northern California, offering
everything from fishing and stargazing to adrenaline-boosting water sports.
The feature, by Carole Barrow, explores the distinct amenities of each body of
water and presents tips on the best lodging and dining in surrounding areas.
Then for some excitement closer to home, check out Flings’ “Hot Summer
Beats.” It’s a rousing roundup of great concerts and musical performances
throughout the Bay Area.
For more ways to fill lazy summer days turn to Calendar, 150-plus things
to do and places to go; it’s nonstop seasonal fun and entertainment designed
to keep impending boredom at bay. And our all-inclusive Dining Out guide
is another indispensable resource to have on hand. Here, you’ll find Best Bites
with a tempting array of diverse options for restaurant dining. From four-star
favorites to trendy bistros, the guide features every type of cuisine to suit both
budget and taste.
Walk off a meal or work up an appetite with a summer stroll through downtown
San Jose to see some intriguing public artwork. In “Art Around Town,”
writer Brandon Yu provides the inspiration by taking readers on a walking
tour highlighting 12 of the city’s most impressive art installations—all free and
accessible to everyone. This pictorial feature is a visual feast, mapping many
artistic treasures you can hunt down on your own two feet.
Summertime is ideal for family reunions and vacations, but distance or health
may make it difficult for some members of the clan to leave home. Enter the
Ohmni Robot, bringing people together in their own homes, helping them
interact with each other. “I, Robot” by writer Julie Vallone is a fascinating
profile of Thuc Vu of San Jose, inventor of the rolling telepresence robot, who
harnesses the power of simple technology to help families stay connected.
Technology is, of course, a driving force in this corner of the world, and that
is especially apparent in our 37th Annual Business Review. Here you’ll find an
insightful overview of last year’s economic picture, as well as our yearly ranking
of Silicon Valley’s Top 100 companies. Also in this issue, local firms take a bow
in The V.I.P. Guide: Our A-List of Resources—a handy advertorial showcase
of outstanding companies doing business throughout the Bay Area.
This dynamic valley is loaded with ways to celebrate summer; just pick your
pleasure, dive in and find your place in the sun!
