October/November 2014 61 CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: ARON COOPERMAN; CINDY KIHN-SANTIAGO; KARIN MORIARTY; COURTESY OF BRAD J. GOLDBERG 10 SINGULAR SHOPPING SJMADE • BAY AREA L OCATIONS This consortium of independent artisans, designers and retailers sets up vendor fairs throughout the Bay Area at festivals and events and sells locally made products and goods. Members also host their own holiday fair in December. To find out where they’ll be, access the group’s website calendar (www.sjmade.com). Through October, Westfield Valley Fair invites a different vendor to operate a pop-up shop at the mall for one month. 13 UNCOMMON SITE S HANNA HOUSE • STANFORD UNIVERSITY A house modeled after the hexagonal shape of beehive honeycombs, with not a single right angle in sight? That’s the curious nature of this Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece and National Historic Landmark. Wright designed the house in 1936 for Professor Paul Hanna and his wife Jean, who lived in the home for 38 years before donating it to the university in 1975. Public tours are offered four times a month. 12 ART AND MUSIC ‘EPOCH’ ROCK SCULPTURE • NETAPP BUILDING , 495 E. J AVA DRIVE, SUNNYVALE You come across art in many unexpected Silicon Valley spots, and there’s a great example by artist Brad J. Goldberg at NetApp, frequently cited as one of the valley’s best places to work. Stop by to see a set of black granite boulders, walk through the tall stones to find lines and lines of binary code, then look even closer to find hidden words that either align or conflict with technology. 11 SINGULAR SHOPPING NATURAL CREATIONS • 108A N. S ANTA CR UZ AVE., LOS GATOS It might be the main drag in this tony town, but North Santa Cruz is full of cunning little byways and covert crannies. The gateway to this shop faces the street, but you enter a long alleyway lush with plants, topiaries, moss-covered hanging baskets and garden art. The sound of splashing water from numerous fountains adds to the ambience of a secret garden.
