October/November 2014 59 FROM TOP: COURTESY OF SOL DESIGN LAB; ERIKA KALI 8 UNCOMMON SITE S HELLYER COUNTY PARK VELODROME • 99 5 HELLYER AVE., SAN JO SE Velodromes once dotted the Northern California landscape, but only one high-banked bicycle racetrack stands today. Numerous national champions hailed from here in the 1930s when San Jose was considered a top U.S. racing spot. The all-volunteer Northern California Velodrome Association carries on the venerable tradition, offering divisions for adults and youth, from beginner to future Olympian. Spectators are welcome. Catch weekly Wednesday night races from April through October. 7 UNCOMMON SITE S SOLARPUMP CHARGING STATION • BR ANNER EARTH S CIENCES LIBRARY, 397 PANAMA MALL, S TANFORD This super-cool, mid-century modern art installation of a classic gas pump conceals a visionary purpose: It’s a solar-powered electric charging station, public gathering spot and educational project. It’s available to charge personal electronics and electric bikes; the station can charge some 50 cellphones, 10 iPads, 15 laptops and 15 LED lights each day. A bank of batteries stores up the sun’s energy, so charging times are equal to plugging into a wall outlet.
