South Bay Accent - Feb/Mar 2016

92 South Bay Accent FROM TOP: SHUTTERSTOCK; CHRIS SCHMAUCH; KIM+PHIL PHOTOGRAPHY ARANCINI These delicious deep-fried stuffed rice balls from Sicily are popping up on more appetizer menus at restaurants and bars around the Bay. Done right, they should feature a molten interior encased by a supercrisp thin crust. You’ll find some of the best arancini (pronounced “aran-cheenee”) at Bertucelli’s La Villa Gourment Italian Delicatessen in Willow Glen. They serve two traditional kinds: one stuffed with beef, pork, sausage, veal, peas and cheese, and one with eggplant and cheese. COFFEE Chromatic Coffee in San Jose was ranked No. 1 on thrillist.com last month, but any of the top dozen or so other listed SV roasters deliver superior java. True coffee connoisseurs also head to places like Barefoot Coffee Roasters headquartered in Santa Clara, and Philz Coffee in Palo Alto, home of the iced mint mojito coffee. BURGERS Grass-fed beef, outrageous toppings, or build your own, we can’t get enough. Gourmet burgers have become a Valley staple. The Counter (Cupertino, Mountain View, San Jose) ranks as a local favorite. The list of add-ons is staggering: 16 different cheeses, 26 different sauces, nearly 50 toppings, and 8 different buns. Where does that leave local favorite Stumpy’s in Willow Glen? Right alongside it, even with a pareddown menu. It’s famous for its Sinister Sauce, a special Thousand Island dressing, and for offering the option of a runny egg on top. Watching that golden goodness run down the sides of your burger will keep you sunny side up. The Counter Bertucelli’s La Villa Chromatic Coffee
