Third Thursdays San Jose Museum of Art, 110 S. Market St., San Jose, sjmusart.org The Museum: Rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection of approximately 2,500 modern and contemporary artworks engage make this museum, which was founded in 1969, a pillar of the community. The SJMA enjoys a well-deserved reputation for acquiring works by pivotal artists early in their career; it supports California artists in particular, and spotlights emerging talents. The Event: The SJMA stays open until 8 p.m. or later, charging only $5 after 5 p.m. with a variety of programs that range from the museum’s popular ArtRage to artist talks and “outside-the-box” programs. ArtRage includes music, DIY art for grownups, cocktails and other treats. Some unusual past programs include a night for dogs, comedy performances, poetry invitationals, improvisational music and dance, performance art, and even video games. Another favorite is the “Booze and Brushes” painting lessons for adults; the museum charges an additional fee for materials. 56 South Bay Accent WHO LOVES ART Family Fun Days Peninsula Museum of Art, 1777 California Dr., Burlingame, peninsulamuseum.org The Museum: There are five galleries for rotating exhibitions by outstanding artists of the Greater Bay Area, an art resource library, a permanent collection and 29 studios where visitors can directly interact with artists who work both in 2D and 3D. Admission is free. The Event: From 2 to 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month, the museum hosts activities that are primarily designed for ages 4–12 with an adult companion. The fun and interactive activities allow children to explore art and create their own one-of-a-kind artworks, drawing inspiration from the exhibitions around them.
