ART NIGHT April/May 2017 55 ICA Live! The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), 560 S. First St., San Jose, sjica.org The Museum: The ICA is dedicated to promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through unique, relevant and thought-provoking art exhibitions and public programs. The 7,500-square-foot museum houses four galleries showcasing the most challenging art from the region. The Event: Expect the unexpected and get in on the joy of creating performance art at ICA Live!, presented from 6 to 10 p.m. the first Friday of every month as part of Downtown San Jose First Fridays. Just as it curates fascinating art, the ICA curates ongoing presentations of engaging and experimental music and performance art during its Friday events. The performances are designed for audience participation. Museum organizers say the goal is to provide guests with a way to explore the role of the performance art medium in contemporary society. In May Xuxa Santamaria, a collaboration by artist Sofia Cordoba and electronic musician Matthew Gonzalez Kirkland, will offer an energetic musical performance, inviting guests to dance and hang out all evening. The museum doesn’t serve food, but guests often meander down South First Street and purchase portable provisions from an interesting array of food trucks and vendors. Thursday Nights at the Anderson Anderson Collection at Stanford University, 314 Lomita Dr., Stanford, anderson.stanford.edu The Museum: The Anderson Collection is one of the world’s most prestigious private collections of modern and contemporary American art, the core of which is housed at Stanford. The collection was built and gifted to Stanford by Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson and Mary Patricia Anderson Pence. The Event: On the last Thursday of the month the gallery space at the Anderson Collection transforms into a theater for film screenings, musical performances and lectures and panel discussions. Contemporary art comes to life in the form of video and live performances; the event also stimulates thought provoking conversations. Museum staff draws upon the resources of the museum and its library, the Denning Family Resource Center, to create unique and interactive programs for the public.
