health + we l l n e s s ▲ Living Your Best (Napa Valley) Life by Dr. sharon ufberg, D.C. fod AS medicine You are what you Remember the saying “You are what you eat”? Well, it turns out we can credit Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, French lawyer and gastromone, for this statement from his 19th century book, La Physiologie du goût (The Physiology of Taste). And it turns out that Brillant-Savarin was absolutely right. No wonder they named a delicious cheese after him! But seriously, never has it been clearer that what we put into our mouths has a significant impact on the overall health of our body and minds. There is an overwhelming amount of research out today that tells us that what mothers eat while pregnant has a huge effect on their children’s wellness long after birth. But despite what our Dr. Melina Jampolis moms ate, we have the ability to optimize our health by making good food choices now. Lucky for the Napa Valley, two of my favorite wellness “Sheroes” are sharing their expertise on this subject at this year’s Festival de Sole. On Saturday, July 13, Dr. Melina Jampolis will be speaking on “Chocolate and Cabernet: A Prescription for Health” at Bardessono. She is particularly passionate about the power of polyphenols. “Polyphenols may be more potent that any vitamin or minerals,” she told me. And she’ll tell you why on July 13th, along with other information about how what we eat impacts our genes. Her book The Calendar Diet describes the benefits of eating seasonally, fresh and local. Wendy Bazilian, author of the SuperFoodsRx Diet, is speaking on Thursday, July 18th at the Vintners Luncheon at Silver Oak Cellars. Her topic is “Pleasures of the Plate: Musings of the Mediterranean.” Wendy is an expert on the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and says, “All foods matter, but real foods matter the most.” And beyond this expert advice at the upcoming Festival de Sole, I share with you my own favorite resources for you, so that you can make your own more informed decisions about what you buy, cook and eat. Whether you decide to be a vegan or eat only organic products or humanely raised meats is a personal choice. There are many ways to mix and match the complex array of food options. Everyone has to find the balance between what one loves to eat, what one should avoid and what is most optimal from a health perspective. Here in the Napa Valley we are blessed with an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, local food sources, weekly farmers’ markets and an environment conducive to eating healthy and consciously. We have numerous ways to enjoy the pleasures of cooking and eating well. EAT Optimizing our overall wellness with the foods we choose to eat, strengthening and supporting our total health status and maintaining a proper weight is a lifelong process that requires continual inspiration and knowledge.
