Auction Napa V alley wild memories Auction Napa Valley 2013 will be remembered for many firsts, but we wanted to celebrate some of the antics of past auctions that stand out for their craziness or sheer excess (all in the name of great causes, mind you). To this effect, we asked some of the most iconic vintners and personalities in the Napa Valley what their favorite, unusual, funny, or perhaps even bizarre memories were of auctions past. This is what we got: Michael Honig of Honig Vineyards: “Walking into the Raymond (hosts of this year’s Barrel Auction) Red Room at 9:00 am and feeling like I was in a private night club in NYC at 4:00 am.” Doug Shafer, Shafer Vineyards: “It was on the night of and after the auction, I think in 1998. There was a family-style dinner on the lawn at Meadowood. The main dish required tortillas, of which there baskets everywhere. I don’t know how it happened but somehow, somewhere, someone tossed a tortilla to a friend, like a Frisbee, and it kind of grew crazy. We turned around to see, amongst sixty tables, tortillas flying everywhere! The most sophisticated food fight ever. Since then, the Auction has never served tortillas.” Fritz Hatten, Auctioneer of 23 years: “One of our bidders in 2000 just appeared out of nowhere, won three lots for a total of $1.7 million, including an Imperial of 1992 Screaming Eagle for $500,000.
