South Bay Accent - Jun/Jul 2016

3 June/July 2016 59 FEED YOUR LOVE OF NATURE 4 FARM LIVING IS THE LIFE FOR ME Spend a day as a farmer right in the middle of San Jose at Veggielution, a nonprofit urban farm in Emma Prusch Park (647 S. King Road). Sign up for Veggielution’s Farm Days, where you’ll get to get your hands dirty working in the fields and learn about sustainable and green farming practices, as well as the importance of urban farms to the local community. Every volunteer is rewarded with some fresh veggies to take home at the end of the day. DRIFT OFF TO OTHER WORLDS JOURNEY TO AWESOME BOOKSTORES 5Indulge your fantasies and curiosity, and keep up on the latest summer best sellers by perusing a great bookstore. Yes, they still exist and are alive and well in the South Bay. Admit it: There’s something so satisfying about the tactile experience of actually picking up books and leafing through the pages before you buy. Try Kepler’s in Menlo Park (1010 El Camino Real), or Books, Inc., in Palo Alto (855 El Camino Real) and Mountain View (301 Castro St.). Doing your summer reading at the beach? Try Bookshop Santa Cruz (1520 Pacific Ave.). Kepler’s FEED YOUR LOVE OF NATURE GREEN THAT THUMB Whether you have a spacious yard or a pint-sized patio, take some time to feather your outdoor nest during the slower days of summer. Start with a visit to a great nursery to get some ideas and score some pretty plants and maybe a pot or two. Sierra Azul Nursery (2660 East Lake Ave., Watsonville) is worth the drive to see its beautiful displays of California native and water-wise plants within a 2-acre demonstration garden. Tucked throughout the garden are dozens of modern art sculptures by local artists. The nursery welcomes picnickers and dogs on leashes.
