VIVA LA MACLA! South First Fridays at MACLA Family Art Day Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana, 510 S. First St., San Jose, maclaarte.org The Museum: A hybrid urban arts space rooted in the Chicano/ Latino experience, MACLA intersects many communities, cultures and aesthetic approaches. The museum was founded in 1989 with a vision of providing arts programming as a vehicle for civic dialogue and social equality. Today MACLA’s patrons, audiences and participants are 70 percent Latino and 30 percent non-Latino. MACLA offers them visual art exhibitions with dance and music performances, youth art education and free public events. South First Fridays: MACLA gets into the spirit of South First Fridays by presenting free music and dance performances from around the world. Performance groups range from the traditional to the forward-thinking, as evidenced by the events offered this spring. On April 7, Valverde Dance performs folkloric dance and music from the Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina and Chile. In May MACLA is featuring Sonido Clash, a San Jose collective of DJs and musicians that pulls from both traditional and modern influences to explore emerging and future Latino sounds. Performances start at 8 p.m. Family Art Day: Every April MACLA welcomes families and “youth of all ages” to Parque de los Pobladores for an afternoon of engaging visual art activities, an outdoor stage with performances, classes for youth, free gallery tours, food, and more. It’s all free, thanks to the support of generous community donors. This spring Family Art Day is noon–3 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. It coincides with Bay Area Dance Week, so MACLA is offering free 30-minute dance classes for youth. The dance genres represented include Afro-Columbian, Mexican Folklorico and Bolivian dance.
