No longer the vintage florals you once knew, wall coverings are back in a big way By Andrea Kalmanovitz Making its debut (again), wallpaper is among today’s hottest design choices. From traditional and classic to bold and graphic, wallpaper can transform a room with its style-defining aesthetic. The big wallpaper trends for 2016 include the cork beaded, micainspired, 3-D and geometric patterns. The history of wallpaper dates back to 16th century Europe, although decorative rice paper hung on walls in China for a couple of thousand years. Today, too often, people resurrect images of 1970s floral patterns when wallpaper is brought up as a decorative wall option. However, modern wall coverings have come a long way in the last few decades. What is described as wallpaper may no longer actually be made from paper. Generally thought of as background rather than foreground, wallpaper’s role in the overall decorative scheme is a vital one, and the choice of wallpaper affects the mood and style of a room, and may influence the choice of other furnishings.
