owners poured their love for the Arts and Crafts period into their newer home. They remained true to that period with furnishings and artwork. The Lillie House (#4) built in 1870, is typical of the Gothic Revival style homes found in Napa Valley. It is a one and one-half story redwood frame building with clapboard siding and the characteristic center gable. This simple design was originally prompted by Andrew Jackson Downing in his 1853 pattern book The Architecture of Country Houses. The home was remodeled to meet code and for general safety by the current owners, who acquired the home in 1989. There were several additions made to the house in the early 1900s, including a back porch area, a couple of lean-to rooms and a shed in the back corner of the property. Lastly, the tour showcases a quaint, newly renovated Victorian Pastor’s cottage, adjacent to “The Church House,” which was on last year’s tour. In addition, due to popular demand, The Sisters at the Holy Assumption Monastery, across the street from the contemporary Craftsman, will again open their gates and offer refreshments to house tour guests. Today the two-story house on the property, originally a railroad boarding house in the 1890’s, is home to a community of Orthodox sisters. S E P T E M B E R / O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3 47 4
