California customers are different from New York and European customers.” Levine said she is a quick study. In her teens and early twenties she sewed most of her own wardrobe. “I studied design and the making of the garments, so I know the structure of an outfit,” she said. “I also like to help women understand their body type and buy outfits accordingly.” i•elle’s customer base have been loyal throughout the years. At one time Levin had four stores, but a few years ago she consolidated down to two stores, one in Yountville and one in Sonoma. Her old Berkeley customers still come to the Napa Valley to shop. She has also gained loyal customers from around the world who met Levine while visiting the Valley. “They are like old friends.” When on buying trips, Levine keeps her customers in mind and often will pick out outfits specifically for someone. “I try to buy American-made as much as possible and use California designers,” said Levine. “I like to represent those designers, except for sweaters. Most sweater manufacturers in the United States have closed down.” Levine said she can’t take all the credit for her success. “Part of my success is listening to my managers and sales associates,” said Levine. “They keep their ear close to the ground when it comes to customer feedback. Debra Indelicito, who has been my manager for twelve years, remembers all our customers, and that is invaluable.” So what’s in this winter? Levine says blue is the new black. There is also a trend elsewhere for fur, but that doesn’t do well in California, so she is bringing in faux fur vests plus high/low sweaters that go well over tapered jeans and leggings.
