NOV E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 3 47 Honoring the simple design of their 1950s cottage, Scott and Jessica decorated their home with classic Scandinavian accents. Wagner wishbone chairs are pulled up to an Eero Saarninen-style tulip dining table, floating bookshelves in the living room are from a Finnish design shop, and an Alvar Aalto stool acts as a side table for a potted plant. The artwork above the fireplace is by another Jessica, a San Francisco artist named Jessica Snow. When Jessica Thomasen worked at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, she met the artist at an exhibit on color theory. The kitchen is pretty much in its original state. It has the same yellow sink, linoleum floor and white wood cabinets it came with. But it has one significant twist—the Thomasens painted the walls blue and hung a modern Lois Poulsen light fixture over the sink. These touches instantly give the kitchen a fresh, current feel. As I write this, Jessica is waiting to give birth any day to their first child. In fact when I took photos of the house, she was expecting to go into labor that day! In serious nest mode, she says this is the tidiest their house has ever looked. The next time I visit, the house will be filled with the chaotic, wonderful energy of a new family member. A mid-century house revived with the vitality of this twentyfirst century family.
