house + home revival Article and photos by indra fortney MID-CENTURY When S cot and J esica T homasen went look ing fo r a house, they k new they wanted two things: a home that was b uilt in the mid-century , and a lo cati on in the Alta H eights area of N apa. They discovered this house, which was constructed in 1950, on a quiet side street in Alta Heights, and they immediately saw the potential. Charmed by the hardwood floors, fireplace, built-in bookcase and the large backyard—perfect for their two dogs—they knew this was the place they wanted to live. Scott and Jessica painted the inside walls a clean, crisp white, which makes the modest-sized interior feel spacious. Large windows are covered in simple, classic roller shades, which are made from a natural, environmentally-friendly material from Denmark. The shades are made in the Bay Area and can be purchased from Boho Lifestyle in Napa. After visiting friends in Denmark and a short stay in Helsinki, Finland, Jessica was besotted with modern Scandinavian design. Carefully wrapped Royal Copenhagen dishware, given to Jessica and Scott, was carried home like treasure. It was something Jessica says they could never have afforded to buy themselves. A collection of delicate handpainted porcelain, this dishware is the perfect accent in their built-in dining room niche.
