Studies have shown that treatment for lung cancer is more effective—and the likelihood of death decreases significantly—if it is detected early through screenings. “This can be a life-saving test,” explains Dr. H ossein Razavi, MD , M edical D irector of St. H elena H ospital’s L ung N odule and E arly Detection L ung C ancer Screening Program. “With this new minimally invasive technology, we can detect cancer at an earlier stage, when patients have more treatment options and a much better outlook for survival. We do not want cost to be a barrier. We want to help people readily access the screenings.” St. H elena H ospital is offering screenings at the reduced rate to those who qualify. B ased on the findings from the screening CT , the program offers access to other services, including counseling on reducing risk, smoking cessation programs, additional diagnostic services and, if needed, treatment. “Our goal is to improve not only the survival rates, but also the quality of life for those at high risk for lung cancer,” says D r. Razavi. H is team includes two other highly skilled C ardiothoracic Surgeons, Andreas Sakopoulos, MD , and Gan Dunnington, MD . I n addition to the screening procedures, the program’s L ung H ealth N urse Navigator, Jennifer O rtelle, RN, serves as a central point of contact for patients and physicians. H er special training in lung health treatment options allows her to provide seamless connection to specialists, patient education, and treatment resources. Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.
