GOING Green Sustainability From vine to bottle, the making of Silverado Vineyards’ exquisite wine depends on the experienced hands of a strong community Good wine is about people, from every hand that helps create our Cabernet Sauvignon to every current and future friend who lifts a glass of our wine around the dinner table. We would not be Silverado Vineyards without a strong community, which is why the Miller family, who owns the winery, feels so strongly about being a good neighbor. Of course that starts with how we go about our daily tasks. Our entire estate is sustainably farmed: 15% is farmed organically; 70% is Certified Napa Green; 50% is preserved in the Land Trust exclusively for open space and agriculture use. Our solar panels power 40% of the winery. We are proud of these accomplishments, but they are just the beginning. We know we can and will do better. For us, sustainable is not simply a farming method, it is an approach to all of our activities. It is the driving force behind everything we do to ensure that this winery and estate are here for generations of our customers, neighbors and the Millers to enjoy. With the aid of the Bay Area Green Business Program in Napa County, an energy and lighting audit was done. The inn is currently in the process of replacing all bulbs in every room and public area with energy-efficient lights. It is also putting sensors on every guestroom air conditioner so they won’t run without the presence of someone in the room. The inn changed the outside house and building light switches to dark/ light sensors so that they turn on only when needed. With thanks to Napa Recycling & Waste Services, the inn recycles all of its cooking oil and e-waste pickup (visit naparecycling.com for info). Using PG&E’s Energy Star Portfolio Manager Program, the inn monitors its monthly water, gas and electric usage to see where they can make improvements, then compare their usage with that of other similar sites. The inn signed up for Spare the Air Day Alerts in order to encourage carpooling for employees and challenge them to use bicycles instead of cars for doing local chores. They also offer stainless steel water bottles and access to a cold water spigot in the dining room so guests do not use plastic water bottles during their stays. The inn was already using a green laundry service, bath product dispensers in showers, low flow faucets, daily food waste composting, using tankless water heaters, and 100% recycled toilet paper.
