March and April are the months for planning the spring and summer garden. The garden will need much more water in coming months. Avoid overhead sprinkling by planning correctly with HEAVY mulch and drip irrigation set on a timer to do a slow soak that will moisten all the roots. You can use some of the water collected in rain barrels. The culinary garden, one of my favorite gardens to build, is perfect for a water-wise system.   Enjoy your gardening! Tools to be water-wise: 1. Drip irrigation (not overhead spraying) 2. Drip emitters 3. Heavy MULCH (for water retention and to avoid evaporation) 4. Changing frost-resistant cloth from winter to shade cover in summer months  GOING Green NAPA VALLEY BUSINESS SPOtLIGHT by the Napa County Green Business Program Napa Valey Coffe Roasting Company As a local business, Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company finds it very important to not only serve the community with a product they work hard on perfecting, but making sure they do so in a green and clean manner. The company feels it is necessary to use all resources possible to keep the environment as happy as their customers. The company has taken numerous steps to become a green business. They use low flow water appliances, a programmable thermostat for heating and cooling, CFL light bulbs, low toxic cleaning products, and have expanded their recycling efforts to reduce waste that goes to the landfill. This includes composting their coffee grounds instead of throwing them in the garbage. In order to continue being as green as possible, Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company has set some goals for the New Year. These goals include making sure their employees are well informed about how to stay green, only running water when absolutely necessary, and keeping customers and employees informed when there is a Spare the Air Day. The Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company is proud of the steps they have taken to become a Green Business and the steps they continue to take to keep the environment safe and clean. To learn more about the Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company’s green efforts, or for a great cup of coffee, visit one of their two locations, in Napa and in St. Helena.
