A Perfectly Fit Day by JOSH SCHLOTM AN Out & about The Napa Valley JANUARY- F E B R UARY 2 0 1 5 37 The Napa Valley has become world renowned for its indulgences in food and wine, but as residents know, there are plenty of hidden health and fitness activities, too. Surrounded by gorgeous scenery, it only takes a little imagination to find ways to take advantage of everything the Napa Valley has to offer while getting your heart rate cranking. To start off, going for a run first thing in the morning will jumpstart your metabolism while also setting the mood for the day. So let’s head down to the Napa River Trail for a scenic and invigorating good morning run. The trail is a paved path that stretches a few miles, with quiet picturesque views along the Napa River. This is a great place to clear your mind, start the day off positive and give your heart rate a boost. After the morning run go to Model Bakery right in the heart of downtown Napa for coffee. Instead of putting sugar in your coffee use an all-fat creamer. The CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) found in cream has been found to help lower body fat. Then take a quick walk over to the nearby Oxbow Public Market for breakfast at C Casa. My favorite healthy meal of choice is the C Scramble with added buffalo. Enjoy your healthy breakfast in the morning air with outdoor seating at the back of the building. Be sure to check out the little juice bar Juicy, here in the Oxbow Public Market too, for some tasty vegetable juice and smoothies to go. They use fresh, organic and locally produced vegetables for their juice. Next up is a bike ride through the beautiful small town of Yountville. Rent some bikes here in town and take a ride down the Vine Trail to see some gorgeous up-close views of vineyards. For lunch, head over to the Yountville Deli for a salad and the Smoked Salmon Club Sandwich. Salmon is loaded with protein and omega–3 fatty acids, which work great to burn fat. While in Yountville walk around the V Marketplace to explore all the speciality shops. Or if you’re looking for something more active just ride over to the the Vintner’s Golf Course to hit some golf balls while enjoying the stunning scenery. It’s time to go back down to the west side of Napa for a sunset hike through Alston Park. This is a beautiful place for a quick hike up to watch the sun set over the nearby mountains. The benches at the top of the hills are perfect spots for watching the sun go down. It’s time for dinner so let’s head to one of my favorite spots to eat, R+D Kitchen. A healthy meal is the Macho Salad; or if you’re looking for something heartier, try the Greek Style Chicken. And, since you live in the Napa Valley, you won’t feel guilty about drinking a glass of red wine. This is a better option than the more sugary white and sparkling wines. To walk off your meal head back down to the Napa riverfront for scenic views along the Napa River, and some afterhours nightlife. In the summer nights the nearby Veterans Park also hosts free live music and dancing. Even a local should get out and have some fun sometime.
