Contra Costa Marketplace - Sept 2016

SEPTEMBER 2016 MARKETPLACECONTRACOSTA.COM 27 El Sobrante Cyclery has given lots of donations to local churches, particularly in Richmond, as well as contributing prizes to BMX jams put on by the locals. The Pedaler has sponsored the 2016 Bike the Bridges event benefitting the Special Olympics, Tour de Cure in Napa benefitting the American Diabetes Association, the 12th Annual Napa Valley Ride to Defeat ALS this October, and much more. The Pedaler also has weekly group rides every Saturday morning and Wednesday night, as well as an in-store mechanics class, all of which you can keep up with on their Facebook or meetup.com pages. Regardless of which of these wonderful bike shops you choose, you really can’t go wrong. Why? “Because neither of us is a department store,” Jerge explains. “100% of the time you go to a department store you are going home with a bad bike. If you come to El Sobrante and you randomly pick a bike store, you will go home with a good bike.” If it’s not part of your life already, maybe it’s time to get a bicycle. Brown hasn’t had a car in the last 15 years, and despite working at his shop in El Sobrante, he lives in San Francisco! “I think of the Bay Area as a really good biking community,” he said. “I just commute by bicycle and jump on BART. You can get around with a little bit of know how.” Albeit he did just succumb to a car this year, but that’s 15 years of zero emissions! Consider it a challenge, maybe…This summer, devote a day or two a week to living life without a car, commuting instead on your new bike from one of these fine El Sobrante establishments. And share your stories! Let us know how it goes. To meet with a cycling professional, head to: • The Pedaler, 3826 San Pablo Dam Road, El Sobrante. (510) 222-3420; theped.com • El Sobrante Cyclery, 5057 El Portal Dr., El Sobrante. (510) 223-3440; elsobcyclery.jimdo.com. BIKE SAFE!
