54 MARKETPLACEcontracosta.com may 2016 BARBECUE SAUCE, NO HFCS My grandpa used to go on a bit back in the eighties—it was hard for him to find jam made with pure sugar anymore. He ranted about the increasing prevalence of high-fructose corn syrup in so many product lines. Before long, I saw many articles about the horrors of HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup). It was implicated in diabetes, heart disease and more. I tried to avoid it and even started ranting myself. My concerns over corn syrup abated some as I saw more people giving up sodas and other junk food. Schools stopped allowing vending machines full of sodas; many parents became more conscientious and health-oriented. By JENNiFER COtE I personally continued to avoid HFCS, and always looked for more wholesome ingredients. But business started booming in the past season; our New Deli team thought it might be handy to try an already-prepared BBQ sauce from one of our suppliers. One of the quality brands available for us passed our taste test. If not as good as our own, it was still decent, and certainly much easier than making our own! Alas, we soon thought to look at the ingredient label, as oft we do. High fructose corn syrup was at the top of the list! Needless to say, we went back to making our BBQ sauce from scratch. It uses simple ingredients, no additives, and can be easily modified to suit individual tastes. Perhaps you too might enjoy making a batch of homemade sauce? If not, just stop by the deli, and we’ll set you up!
