Soroptimist is an international service organization of professional and executive women united to provide service to others and to promote personal and professional growth. Soroptimist International of Richmond was founded in 1939, and has approximately 35 members. Each year the members vote to support numerous service projects proposed by non-profit groups throughout West Contra Costa. Last year the Club’s Service Grants totaled more than $40,000, awarded for needed services such as after school activities, programs for health and education, programs benefiting seniors, disabled people, the homeless and abused women and children. Scholarships and awards are also given for high school students looking to continue their education beyond high school, to high school students acknowledging their volunteer efforts in the community, and to head of household mothers studying to re-enter the work force or improve their employment status.
