SILICON VALLEY’S PHOTO COURTESY OF JOAN MARCUS For more than a dozen companies in Silicon Valley, major realignment defined the ebb and flow of business in 2016; it will be remembered as the year when numerous venerable public firms traded their independence for the financial and structural security they hoped to achieve through merger and ownership change. Fairchild Semiconductor Inc., a stalwart of the Silicon Valley tech world, was acquired by ON Semiconductor. Other names that ended their stand-alone status include LinkedIn Corp., SanDisk Corp., Linear Technology Corp., Atmel Corp., Ruckus Wireless Inc., Marketo Inc., Affymetrix Inc., Infoblox Inc and OmniVision Technologies Inc. Entertainment tech firm Rovi Corp. bought DVR maker TiVo, the name now carried by the combined company. Hewlett Packard in 2016 also experienced the consequences of rebooting, although internal. It was the first full year of operation since tech firm split into two publicly traded firms, Hewlett Packard Enterprise—focused on business technology and services—and HP Inc., which sells business and personal printers and PCs. Was the split a wise move? That remains to be seen, but short-term, the business technology company, HPE slid from the No. 2 spot held by the original HP on last year’s South Bay Accent’s annual Top 100 list to No. 4 , and its PC business, HPQ, landed in sixth place.
