South Bay Accent - Jun/Jul 2015

TODAY MORE THAN EVER, BRIDAL COUPLES WANT THEIR WEDDINGS PERSONAL, POLISHED AND REFLECTIVE OF THEIR OWN UNIQUE SELVES. Upscale hotels are a blank canvas for the themed wedding of your dreams. June/July 2015 79 As for wedding cakes, they are more personalized than ever. The standard Fairmont practice is to customize every tier, using different icings and flavorings for each layer to suit various palates. Forrest mentions a trend that has individual, miniature cakes on each table instead of a large one for the crowd. While Patten admits to these cakes’ visual appeal, he finds them wasteful for a large gathering. Instead, he suggests a small cake for the cake-cutting ceremony and a dessert buffet to please every guest’s taste. THE LOOK OF LOVE Every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day, and the South Bay is home to many retailers and stylists who can help her narrow down a multitude of choices and achieve perfection. Steven Blechman, marketing manager of Trudys Brides in Campbell, points to a trend toward simple, romantic lace dresses. “There are so many outdoor weddings ... and lace looks so organic and beautiful on grass or in a garden setting,” he notes. Hot styles include a fitted bodice that drops into a fuller (not poufy) skirt, suggesting an ethereal “Grecian goddess” air. Low- or sheer-backed designs add visual impact and a touch of whimsy, and bustier tops above flowing skirts are a “fun and flirty” option. While dresses tend to show more skin than in the past, Blechman stresses that they still look tasteful. Thanks to its softer, more flattering tones, “ivory is the new white,” he says. An ethereal ivory overlay can play off vibrant linings of champagne or cafe underneath, “all to add that vintage, antique flavor.” JANAE SHIELDS
