The cowhands here will turn city slickers into seasoned ranch hands in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. Owned by the Hunewill family for five generations, the guest ranch focuses on horseback riding for adults and children at least 5 years old. Unlike other facilities, Hunewill gives riders the freedom to gallop through 26,000 acres of open land instead of sedately guiding their horses in a single line, nose to tail. During the weeklong program, each rider is assigned a trusty steed and moves from practice skills in the yard to trotting in the open field. With enough practice and grit, you could find yourself jumping your horse over ditches by the end of your stay. If that’s not exciting enough, you can sign up for handson experience in fall cattle ranch duties and help to drive 600 head of cattle to a ranch in Nevada. For the family outing, the day begins with breakfast, followed by horseback riding, lunch and an afternoon ride before the evening meal. Post-dinner activities include square dancing, hayrides and a talent night. Cabins feature porches, cozy beds and private bathrooms—but no TVs. At Hunewill, all the fun and socializing is done outdoors. For the novice, sitting astride one ton of horseflesh can be a harrowing experience; for many parents, however, it’s more challenging trying to separate a child from the horse he or she has bonded with when it’s time to go home. The folks at Hunewill say they receive many emails from kids to their horse buddies.
