MAYOR ON A MISSION SAM LICCARDO BELIEVES IN THE GLORY OF SAN JOSE AND URGES CITIZEN PRIDE AND COLLABORATION TO LIFT THE CITY TO GREATER HEIGHTS. BY JULIE VALLONE SAN JOSE MAYOR SAM LICCARDO remembers the day in the mid ‘90s when he received his acceptance letter from law school and went to tell his grandfather about it. “He was in his backyard picking plums off a tree, and I said ‘Grandpa; check it out. I got into Harvard!’” His grandfather, also named Sam (formerly Salvadore) Liccardo, didn’t respond. The younger Liccardo tried to get his attention a couple more times, not understanding his grandfather’s silence. “Finally, he stopped picking the plums, turned to me and said, ‘Sam, whatever you do, don’t be one of those people.’” PHOTO BY CHRIS AYERS; MEN’S GROOMING BY KARIE BENNETT OF ATELIER SALON, SANTANA ROW; LOCATION COURTESY OF THE FAIRMONT SAN JOSE June/July 2015 55
