PHOTO COURTESY OF JOAN MARCUS SILICON VALLEY’S Silicon Valley’s Top 100 companies found solid financial ground in 2014. Overall revenue for the 100 companies rose nearly 5 percent compared to last year. Mature tech giants held steady in particular, securing the top five spots once again, with Apple taking the lead for the third consecutive year followed by Hewlett-Packard, Google, Intel and Cisco—all holding the same rankings as last year. Their combined revenue of $463 billion represents a $14 billion increase over last year. Big revenue jumps weren’t just for giant tech companies. Electric car maker Tesla also experienced huge growth for the second consecutive year that catapulted the Palo Alto-based company to No. 29 from No. 41. Since 2013, the company has climbed 47 spots. The hot IPO market also shook up our rankings, bringing four newcomers: Camera-maker GoPro Inc. made its debut at No. 50 after going public in 2014; software company FireEye and data-analysis company Rocket Fuel ranked No. 79 and No. 80, respectively, and peer-to-peer lending company Lending Club joined the list at No. 99 after becoming California’s largest IPO of the year in 2014. With these highlights of how our region’s major corporate players fared financially last year, here’s the 33rd edition of South Bay Accent’s Silicon Valley Top 100, ranked by revenue.
