SIMPLE TR AINER TIPS THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE 1/ Drink lots of water. We’ve heard it before, but Ben Zorn emphasizes, “Drink water and only water and as much as you can. Get as close to a gallon of water a day as you can.” He’s no fan of smoothies, alcohol, fruit juices—too many empty calories. Zorn points out that it takes three oranges to make a cup of orange juice. “If you were to eat three oranges, how full would you feel as compared to drinking that cup of juice?” Drink water instead and your body will feel sated and actually release excess fluid, he explains. 2/ Sitting is the new smoking. “If you sit for ten hours a day and then go to the gym for an hour, that hour-long workout cannot overcome the ten hours of sitting,” says Selman. Set an alarm for every hour and just get up and move, even if it’s only for a couple of minutes. Sitting all day can shorten your hip flexors and joints, creating back pain. SELMAN COACHES A BATTLE ROPES WORKOUT. 3/ Add stretching and mobility work to your workout. Selman notes that by lifting weights without doing mobility work you can set yourself up for injury. “Get your hips and shoulders open so that when you do an exercise, you help and don’t hurt your body.” Weights put a load on your structure, she adds, so it needs to be in a very aligned position. 4/ Incorporate strength training into your routine. “When you increase your muscle mass through strength training, it helps you burn more calories even when you’re not working out. A strength workout will give you an afterburn effect. Maybe you burn fewer calories than a run that takes the same amount time, but your metabolism for the next few hours is increased, even if you’re not doing anything.” 5/ Finally, the best workout you can do is the one that you will do. If you enjoy walking, says Zorn, then walk. “Don’t sign up for Crossfit if you know that you hate Crossfit,” he says. You have to enjoy your workout or you won’t do it. So hike, walk the dog, swim, and feel good about making that your fitness routine. “Don’t feel that you have to run a marathon or kill your body in order to be in shape. Do what you already love.” February/March 2016 75
