IF fitness is the new American religion, complete with rituals, sacrifices and moments of divine exhilaration, it follows that trainers are the new clerics. No pulpits, of course. No choirs. No pews. But they offer inspired guidance amid a vast array of complex machines, some to sit on, others to kneel before, all designed to put you directly in touch with your higher being. That version of you shows off a trim waist, taut pecs, tight abs and a positive can-do attitude; it’s the same one who avoids cronuts and lives on kale smoothies. But how to maintain your workout regimen and get the most out of the intimidating equipment? ¶ That’s where fitness trainers play a vital role. They take up the mantle of healthful living and carry it forth into our community as exemplars of toned perfection in muscle and mind alike. They show us what we can expect from each machine, and what it expects from us—Mostly determination, endurance and buckets of sweat. ¶ The South Bay plays host to gurus in every stretch-and-grunt endeavor from Pilates to Melt to CrossFit to Cardio-Dance. Some have achieved impressive results worth a closer look, and they’ve also merged physical improvement with a mindful philosophy. We’ve turned our spotlight on two skillful practitioners, a woman and man who put out the best in themselves to bring out the best in us. February/March 2016 73
