Sam’s Chowderhouse (185 University Ave., Palo Alto) is the goto spot for both New England and Manhattan clam chowders; it’s consistently ranked as one of the best Bay Area restaurants for seafood overall. The restaurant serves $5 steaming bowls of New England clam chowder and one of the best seafood lunch deals around: half a hearty salad—shrimp Louie, smoked salmon cobb or seafood salad—and a cup of soup; choose between New England or Manhattan style chowder, or Louisiana Style Shrimp/Crab Gumbo. Like Sam’s, Billy’s Boston Chowder House (29 E. Main St., Los Gatos) carries both creamy and tomato broth chowders. Billy’s boasts that it brings guests right back to Boston with authentic New England style dishes like “Real New England Chowda,” “Lobsta” rolls, whole Maine “Lobsta,” and a Boston version of cioppino. The chowder comes in cups, bowls or sourdough bread bowls. On game days, Warriors fans enjoy $3 beer and $3 house wine, with purchase of an entrée. The eatery also serves bottomless $6 mimosas with purchase of an entrée during weekend brunch. Beyond chowders, Sweet Mango (1040 Willow St., San Jose) has a version of an old favorite that makes the restaurant well worth a visit. Customers at this Burmese- Chinese spot in Willow Glen love to lap up Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup—a creamy concoction made with coconut milk and seasoned with cilantro and lime. Another favorite is shrimp pumpkin soup, slow-cooked in thick chicken broth. For more than 40 years, the soups at Erik’s Deli restaurants throughout the South Bay have warmed the hearts and tummies of local diners. Known for top-quality ingredients and fast, friendly service, Erik’s never disappoints with such simmered delights as its popular butternut squash soup—made with sweet potatoes, butternut squash, spices, heavy cream, honey and sage—and savory vegetable soup, loaded with everything from carrots and cauliflower to red potatoes and zucchini. Spreadz is a cozy little spot in Santa Clara (2348 Walsh Ave.) with a nice selection of soups that satisfy on their own or paired with tasty sandwiches. Delicious standbys include tomato basil, cream of broccoli and hearty minestrone. — Pam Marino Orchard City Kitchen
