South Bay Accent - Dec 2015/Jan 2016

58 South Bay Accent Super Bowl Fun Facts 1/ California hosted the inaugural Super Bowl, when the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35–10 on Jan. 15, 1967, down in Los Angeles, so it is only fitting that the event returns for its 50th anniversary. 2/ In five decades, the Super Bowl has grown from a novelty that couldn’t sell out that first game at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum to a cultural phenomenon. Although the first Super Bowl drew a TV audience of 50 million, that figure shrunk to 40 million a year later. Maybe it was because halftime entertainment initially consisted of college marching bands and high school drill teams. 3/ This past February, an average of 114 million viewers watched the game between Seattle and New England, and nine of the top 10 televised sporting events in history are Super Bowls. Recent Super Bowl halftime shows have featured such pop superstars as Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Beyoncé and Madonna. 4/ To afford top-notch performers, the game has to bring in more capital. And the cost of a 30-second Super Bowl commercial does the trick, soaring from $42,000 in 1967 to $4.5 million this year. 5/ As it celebrates the Super Bowl’s 50th anniversary, the NFL is even altering some of its advertising staples to highlight its enormity. Instead of the classic Roman numerals, used to underline the event’s anniversary, this next Super Bowl is using Arabic numerals—a first since Super Bowl 4. In addition, the normally silver numbering will appear in gold to celebrate the event’s golden anniversary in the Golden State.
