THE DANCE FLOOR MICHELLE LAMBERT WHAT: First Night Monterey 2017 (firstnightmonterey.org) WHERE: Downtown Monterey, starting on Alvarado and Franklin Streets WHY: The event starts at 3 p.m. and runs through midnight, as it has for 24 years. Taiko drumming, face painting, and cultural performances of every ilk will be up close and personal in this alcohol-free party celebrating art, music and dance. All will be able to participate in hands-on art activities or just enjoy watching artists at work. A puppet show, folk music and magic show are just a few of the animated acts slated for First Night. Events will take place at various venues, and entrance badges are available for sale online or at local supermarkets and drug stores. This is one of the rare opportunities where multiple generations can come together to have a blast. At 11 p.m., two indoor and two outdoor concerts will ring in a rip-roaring close to 2016. From Michael Jackson to Frank Sinatra, Journey, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, and everything in between, this upbeat ensemble delivers danceable tunes designed to pack the floor. At the historic Fox Theater, fans 21 and older will be able to relive their favorite top 40 musical moments from the sock-hop hits of the ’50s to hip hop from the ’90s and even fist-pounding classic rock sing-alongs from legends like AC/DC. Guests can purchase a general ticket to access the theater’s dance floor or reserve a seat in the balcony mezzanine. For a premium experience, book a table so you and your friends can have a landing pad all night long. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. The evening culminates with an extravagant balloon drop at the stroke of midnight.
