August/September 2016 63 COURTESY OF HYATT LAKE TAHOE; OPPOSITE: VANCE FOX; PREVIOUS SPREAD: DON RIDDLE HYATT REGENCY LAKE TAHOE RESORT Perched on the lip of Lake Tahoe, the AAA Four- Diamond Hyatt reigns as the one resort with full private water access. “Our location and private beach is what people talk about,” says Brian Lang, director of sales, marketing and events. “We are the only resort on the beach, and that sets us apart.” A recent remodel of the 422 guestrooms also sets it apart. Everything is spanking new inside and out. In 2014, the entire hotel was gutted and renovated, from pools to plantings, from the casino tables to carpeting, from room furnishings to food services. The property blankets 26 lush acres with a 12-story tower and casino, cottages and restaurants. You are never more than five minutes by foot away from the water. Renovated appointments include the Hyatt Grand Bed with a pillow-top mattress, mini fridge and a safe large enough for laptops. Regency Club Room guests gain superstar access to the hidden lounge with personal concierge, breakfast daily, all-day beverages and evening cocktails. Mesmerizing views of the lake are complimentary. We especially recommend the bungalows. A two-bedroom cottage comes with 1,225 square feet with living room, fireplace, kitchen and dining area. For outdoor fun, rent a powerboat or kayak. Sail the Sierra Cloud catamaran at sunset. “We have every water sport you can think of, and you can do that here and not have to go anywhere else,” says Lang. Fishing is a popular option, too. In the morning you depart on a charter boat to a secluded fishing spot. After you reel in your catch, you meet with the hotel chef to discuss how you want the fish prepared. Your bounty is now your dinner. Seven restaurants and lounges accommodate every taste craving. The Lone Eagle Grille, with wood and stone interior, tantalizes crowds with a dynamic range of seafood and game meats. It represents the highest level of achievement for every venue. On the floating pier bar, Pier 111, the bartender shakes up a delicious Lakeside Lemonade infused with pomegranate liquor. Designed to attract families, the Hyatt provides kid-friendly services—children’s menus, extra cribs, a wading pool, and Camp Hyatt for ages 5–12. Free morning strolls and crafts are available to non-campers, too. For parents hoping to rejuvenate, Stillwater Spa beckons with specialties like the Lake Tahoe Stones. This massage utilizes warmed granite rocks culled from the lake. Another in the 16-room facility, the Sierra Dreams treatment, features the scent of French lavender as one ingredient in a full body exfoliation and body wrap. It’s no overstatement to report that you are in for a transformative weekend of water sports, fine dining, and spa indulgence at the Hyatt. And that Lakeside Lemonade? Transformative! HYATT REGENCY LAKE T AHOE 111 Country Club Drive, Incline Village, Nevada; 775/832.1234, laketahoe.hyatt.com. Rates: Summer, low $300s; fall $149 and up. CEDAR HOUSE SPORT HOTEL Trust owners Jeff and Patty Baird to combine rest with outdoor exploration. At Cedar House, the Bairds have installed T3 Adventures, the couple’s in-house nature-tour company. It curates unusual outings for all interests. During a two-hour, botanist-led foraging journey, for instance, you track down edible mushrooms, weeds and plants, and learn how to turn them into enviable dishes. On the “Shinrin Yoku forest bath,” you embark on a wooded hike to explore the senses. If you prefer to coordinate your own adventure, you can also utilize T3 to rent backpacks, tents and other outdoors gear. The Bairds, says Patty, are more than happy to help you “create your own Tahoe.” They’ve adapted the practices of the ski chalets they encountered during their European travels in order to deliver exceptional service with downhome hospitality. As first time hoteliers, they vowed to convey a similar warmth and approachability, and when their 40-room hotel opened in 2006, those efforts paid off with Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe’s swim-in, swim-out pool is heated year round.
