Look up the definition of “Hole in the Wall Restaurants” and you’ll see a photo of Hunan Taste (998 N. 4th St., San Jose), but as its many loyal fans will tell you, pay no attention to the exterior and décor, and focus on what makes this 25-year institution special—tasty Chinese food. Locals who frequent Hunan Taste at lunchtime take advantage of the $7.50 lunch specials, which include a generous portion of one of the restaurant’s stir fries served over rice. The menu features two chicken dishes (garlic, curry), five beef dishes (broccoli, vegetables, bean curd and vegetables, hot and sour or curry), a vegetarian dish (curry vegetables), and a dish featuring smoked ham. Pizza by the slice is the star of the lunch special at T-Birds Pizza (444 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos). Choose a single slice or two from a daily selection of cheese, pepperoni, or a T-Bird combination, for only $3.45 per slice. Or get the $7.50 lunch special that includes your choice of one pizza slice, a trip to the salad bar and unlimited fountain drinks. The Driftwood Deli and Market (3450 El Camino Real, Palo Alto) has been serving local residents for 50 years, offering a good old deli menu of sandwiches and salads. Make your way to the back of the market, and you’ll find an expansive chalkboard menu of favorites, like the “Heaven on Earth,” a hearty sandwich of roast beef, melted jack cheese, bacon and avocado. Daily specials include the soup of the day, or a small green salad, and a half sandwich for $7.50, There’s also a featured sandwich of the day; the price varies depending on the sandwich. Ramen House Ryowa (859 Villa St., Mountain View) keeps its regulars happy with a Monday through Friday lunch special of various pot stickers paired with ramen and either rice or fried rice, ranging in price from $9.75 (rice) to $10.75 (fried rice). Pot stickers include shoyu, butter corn, miso, wonton or the Ryowa. The restaurant serves a smaller portion of ramen with the lunch special, but some customers say it’s still generous.
