While Carmel has long been recognized as one of the most dog-friendly cities on the West Coast, other favorite weekend getaway spots are catching up. The Inn at Mavericks in Half Moon Bay is one of several hotels in that scenic area that welcomes dogs. This coastal inn has special pet-friendly accommodations that even have fencedin patios. The Inn accepts up to two dogs of any size, provided they know how to behave. Plus, if you tell the hotel about Fido when making your reservation, a doggie gift basket will be waiting upon your arrival. A newer relaxation spot in San Juan Bautista, Hacienda de Léal advertises itself as a pet-friendly boutique hotel. The renovated resort has its own “pooch playground,” cozy dog beds and a gift package for each dog. It also has a two-dog limit per room, and animals must weigh less than 65 pounds. One of the most dog-friendly places we found was the Westin Verasa Napa, which welcomes all dogs of any size, no limits and no extra fees. It even supplies owners with a list of wineries and vineyards that are particularly welcoming to dogs. Most hotels will add extra pet fees (for example, Inn at Mavericks charges $50 per stay). It’s always wise to call ahead and make sure you understand a hotel’s pet policies, which often include not leaving unattended pets in the room unless they are crated.
