“Dogs are not our whole lif e, but they make our lives whole.” August/September 2015 71 SHUTTERSTOCK; OPPOSITE PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: SHUTTERSTOCK; COURTESY OF VOYCE; COURTESY OF BISCUITS PET BOUTIQUE —Roger Caras, photographer and writer WALK IN THE PARK The Bay Area has what’s considered to be the best dog park in the world within driving distance: Fort Funston in San Francisco. Among human companions we spoke to, this is—paws down—their favorite dog park/beach. With 35 acres of beachfront property, Fort Funston is a must visit, but plenty of closer options abound. Silicon Valley’s favorite dog parks include Butcher Park in San Jose and Mitchell Park in Palo Alto. If the fear of unknown dogs makes you nervous, consider the members-only and fee-based dog park at Humane Society Silicon Valley. Here, dogs are prescreened and must have up-to-date vaccinations. If enhancing your list of human friends is a goal, then consider joining a doggie social club. You can find tons of like-minded doggie groups on sites such as meetup.com.
