August/September 2014 59 COURTESY OF VALLEY CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS By SUSAN KERR Sharpen your pencil and power up your iPad, because here is today’s quiz: STEM is (a) a buzzword that is easy to pronounce but hard to describe; (b) America’s last desperate hope to stay a superpower; (c) Silicon Valley’s second favorite acronym right after IPO; (d) a secret plan for robots to take over Planet Earth. And the best answer is … you got it: “d.” But bonus points for those of you arguing for all of the above. Faster than it takes to compute two times two, coalitions are springing up to promote STEM education— shorthand for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics—but this hot-button issue reaches far beyond pedagogy to national security and international economic concerns. Here in the heartland of high tech, schools are working hard to meet the challenges produced by the STEM movement. In particular, South Bay private schools with active parent associations, forward thinking administrations and flexible budgets are busy expanding their STEM curriculums. »
