“for every minute you are angry, you lose 60 seconds of happiness,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. “Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened,” Dr. Seuss advised. Memorable quotations on happiness fill volumes, and they’ve been recorded since biblical times. Many are inspirational; others, like Mark Twain’s—“Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination”—arrive from a slightly skewed perspective. But they all have one thing in common: They describe a state of being in the world that we all wish to attain. For those of us lucky enough to live in the South Bay, bliss appears to be as readily available as the air we breathe. According to the 2015 Gallup- Healthways Well Being Index, the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara metropolitan area was listed as one of the top 10 “happiest cities” in America. The measuring yardstick used by Gallup awards high marks for residents’ good incomes, low unemployment, good health and a low crime rate. But like all sweeping pronouncements, this one tends to gloss over day-to-day reality in favor of a fanciful narrative.
