64 South Bay Accent COURTESY OF SADDLE CREEK RESORT (2) SADDLE CREEK RE SORT Saddle Creek is semi-private and open to the public. You might ask: What is a spectacular golf course doing in a place like this? Copperopolis, really? This is where copper was mined up until World War II, for bullets, so the story goes. Not too much happened here between the war and 1996, when real estate development firm Castle & Cook constructed a golf course over the picturesque rolling hills and languishing wetlands. Today, Saddle Creek is a beautiful scene to behold and presents stunning vistas, including views of snow-capped Sierra peaks to the east. Castle & Cook has more recently minted a frontier town, Copperopolis Square, that includes a courthouse, school and period storefronts that feature contemporary dining, entertainment and for weary travelers, an espresso bar, located right off Highway 4. The golf course, about five miles from the highway and nestled into the spacious hills, was designed by Carter Morrish. It stretches 6,803 yards from the tips, par- 72. There is not a mundane hole on this course. Each has a distinct personality, and with eight different sets of tees, Saddle Creek presents enjoyable golf for every level of player. The course has earned numerous accolades from the golf and travel media, including 4½ stars and “best new upscale” rating from Golf Digest, and South of Angels Camp, down two-lane Highway 4, over 10 miles of winding road amid a surreal landscape of oak and slate is Copperopolis, home of Saddle Creek Resort and named in 2013 by Golfweek magazine as “California’s 10th-best course you can play.” SADDLE CREEK RESORT GOLF COURSE, 1001 Saddle Creek Drive, Copperopolis, 6,803 yards, par 72, 75.8/139 tips; 6,267 yards, 71/129 blue/white combo tees; 4,485 yards, 67.1/116 red ladies tees.
