WINE AND GOLF. ¶ When you hear those words together, the wine generally comes in the form of “whine,” as in, “I haven’t played in weeks” or “I usually hit the ball a lot better, but my bunion is bothering me.” Here though, we steer clear of gripes and focus on grapes—a much more positive and palatable approach whereby we finish off a round of golf with a convenient glass of fine Northern California wine. ¶ Yesterday’s whiskey-swilling, cigar-chewing country clubber might not fully appreciate a course set amid the rolling vineyards of our Golden State, but today’s golfer is a different breed. What could possibly be better than playing a gorgeous course and knowing that a great taste of the surrounding bounty awaits at the 19th hole? In the same way that a good Bordeaux might blend disparate grape varietals to form a work of art, acres of vineyards mingle with greens and fairways to enhance beautiful— and often challenging—nearby golf courses. ¶ Following are four to sample. courses in local wine areas.
