SPOTLIGHT By Wendy Wall Sublime Seating Taoism’s best recognized symbol, the Yin-Yang, takes on a functional role with Dedon’s stunning chaise lounge. Incorporating the dynamic opposites of Chinese philosophy, the chaise harmoniously interplays color and form, with bronze- and platinum-colored fibers and concave and convex surfaces. The inspiration for the Yin-Yang chaise came to designer Nicolas Thompkins while sitting on the beach in the Philippines. The resulting shape reflects elements of nature that are interdependent, with the exterior form representing sand dunes sculpted by wind and the circular cushions suggesting stones worn by water. Dedon’s expert weavers use nearly 4,000 meters of durable waterproof fiber to create each Yin-Yang lounge. The fiber itself is sustainably produced in the company’s zero waste factory, is 100 percent recyclable, and is non-toxic. The Yin-Yang chaise lounge can be custom-ordered for $13,090 from Dunkirk in San Francisco. 415/863-7183. 8 South Bay Accent Undercover Clock It might seem like something straight out of a James Bond film, but this common-looking clock was created with everyday detectives in mind. With a built-in motion-activated video camera, the clock is actually a mini surveillance device that can be used to monitor your home, pets or whatnot. The camera’s sensor captures 720 x 480 resolution video from nine feet away, and its microphone records sounds up to 16 feet from the device. The clock’s memory card holds up to 12 hours of video. Users can easily access the recorded information by downloading it to computers with a Windows 7, Vista or XP operating system. Of course, the video surveillance clock tells time, too. Visit hammacher.com to find the lifetime guaranteed clock for $149.95. Cool MBrew ost of us feel less than glamorous upon rolling out of bed in the morning, but Bodum’s Bistro Pour Over coffee maker provides a quick fix of style. With its ultramodern design, the coffee pot has a number of attributes, the least of which is its chic appearance. The sleek machine replaces the traditional drip system with a “showering” method, which operates by heating water to 190 degrees in a removable reservoir, and transporting it up a pipe to an easy-to-clean showerhead. (Because the reservoir is clear, you can even watch the brewing process for some morning amusement.) The brewing machine features a gold-plated titanium filter, eliminating the need for paper, which can absorb essential oils and reduce the coffee’s flavor. The Bodum Bistro Pour Over coffee maker holds up to 40 ounces of joe and is available in red, lime and black for $149.99 at 6pm.com. E x c i t i n g F i n d s
