Dear Friends,
I recently had the opportunity to help with a youth etiquette dinner. The Young Men’s organization was in
charge, and they had gone to great lengths to make the evening special. The tables were set with happy
white daisy centerpieces, carefully folded napkins, and multiple plates, bowls, forks, and spoons—the
kind that would all need to be hand-washed after the event.
As the youth began to arrive, a fun excitement filled the room. The adults were busy making last-minute
preparations, a group of boys were all crowded around a table near the back laughing and joking, and
several girls were seated quietly whispering and talking. During this time, I happened to notice a young
woman—one who is particularly shy—come in and sit down alone at a table across the room.
I was immediately uncomfortable. However, before I could even respond, five girls stood up in complete
unison and quickly made their way to her table. Their sincere smiles and friendly words of welcome were
so tender and heartwarming, it literally brought tears to my eyes, and I could not prevent them from
rolling freely down my cheeks.
In the days that have followed, I have thought of that moment often. It has repeatedly reminded me of the tender words of Lucy Mack Smith:
“We must cherish one another, watch over one another, comfort one another and gain instruction that we may all sit down in heaven together.”
It has also tenderly reminded me of the words from one of my favorite hymns—“Lord, I Would Follow Thee”: “In the quiet heart is hidden
sorrow that the eye can’t see.”
Surely we all come in contact with people who are quietly sorrowing, even though we have no idea of those sorrows. President Henry B. Eyring
beautifully reminds us, “The Savior watches over the struggling member as a friend. He laid down His life for all of us. He loves us and will grant
us, if we are faithful, the gift of feeling a part of His love for them. . . .”
How wonderful it is to know—especially at this Easter season—that through the Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ it is possible for Him to
grant us the gift of feeling a part of His love for all those around us. May we look for opportunities to put our arms around each other and truly
cherish one another, that we may comfort one another and that we may all sit down in heaven together.
Sincerely,
Susan Condie
