26 The Westin Kierland Resort in North Scottsdale also recognizes an updated approach to spotlighting Arizona treasures. Visit Nellie Cashman’s Monday Club Cafe, one of three restaurants on this beautiful property, to celebrate both Arizona history and ingredients. Settle in with a view of the Kierland Golf Course and McDowell Mountains and peruse the menu anchored by a selection of USDA prime cuts sourced from ranches across Arizona. New this year is Doc’s Watering Hole (named after Doc Holliday), a small bar that serves ten Arizona wines and ten Arizona brews. Property Beverage Specialist Matt Allen has created a menu that revolves around locally-distilled spirits with a modern interpretation of recipes dating from the 1800s, including complex barrel-aged cocktails such as a Manhattan with Arizona Distilling Company’s Copper City Bourbon and a Rob Roy with Del Bac’s mesquite-smoked whiskey. Wine lovers will want to visit the Wrigley Mansion and Geordie’s Steak where those in the know have discovered Jamie’s Wine Bar, a new addition to the Biltmore area. Once a formal study in this historic 1920s mansion currently owned by the Hormel family, it’s an intimate space accented with original mahogany woodwork, sparkling chandeliers, and a six-seat marble bar. Helmed by wine specialist Michael Vincent, nephew of namesake Jamie, it offers 800 bottles and 25 wines by the glass, and boasts an 8-bottle Wine Emotion preservation system from which guests can order premium wines such as Château Musar, Turley Juvenile Zinfandel, and Ca’ Marcanda Promis in 5 and 3-ounce pours or 1-ounce tastes. “I spent a lot of time in wine bars in San Francisco, Bourdeaux and Paris this past summer, but didn’t feel like we had anything quite like that,” says Vincent. “I wanted a cozy, lounge-like place where someone could really immerse themselves with a glass of wine, relax, and have a good time.” Imbibers can order from Geordie’s Steak or from the bar menu which features a nod to the Hormel family with the signature Spam Cubano, a delicious pressed sandwich layered with Spam, pulled pork, smoked gouda, chipotle mayo, whole-grain mustard, and pickles on buttery grilled torta bread served with housemade chips. What makes Wrigley Mansion with its stunning sunset views even more special is it is zoned as a private club, but a variety of inexpensive memberships come with perks. Join the Wine Membership at $75 a year which offers 25% off bottles, 15% off of wines by the glass, and complimentary valet. Not as hidden, but just as worthy to seek out is Crujiente Tacos in Arcadia Village Shopping Center. Open for just six months, it’s quickly making a name for itself and it’s easy to see why. Co-owners Jason Morris and Chef Richard Hinojosa bring quite a pedigree. Morris, previously a founding partner of Quench Fine Wines, and Chef Hinojosa, former Executive Chef of Wigwam resort with time spent at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa and Mary Elaine’s at the Phoenician Resort, have formed a beverage and culinary dream team. “I wanted to plant a taco restaurant in town that wasn’t quite like any other,” explains Chef Hinojosa. “I love the Arcadia neighborhood. It’s very supportive of quality local restaurants, so I thought a modern taqueria with interesting, refined tacos would add another fun dining option to the area.” Chef Hinojosa has parlayed his multiple Arizona Taco Festival awards into this winning concept centered around sophisticated, mouth-watering tacos showcasing global flavors. “I wanted to take my years of cooking experiences and travels, and translate it into tacos with my creative interpretations,” says Chef. This includes Korean fried chicken with spicy gochujang chili paste, mojo de cebollin and compressed cabbage, and juicy Cedar River steak with sweet and sour onions and zesty chimichurri sauce. “I want to put big, bold flavors together, but I want them to work well together, in harmony.” Mission accomplished. Complement these with a selection from the 100% Spanish wine list, an extensive spirit collection (70 tequilas and mezcals and 47 whiskeys) or one of the wonderful craft cocktails. “The signature cocktail list was a creative collaboration with Fred Sconfienza, who is a mixologist from The Westin Maui,” Morris describes.
