At my age, the stupid things I did while learning how to function in the adult world are supposed to be a thing of the past. That being said, it is equally important to keep having fun and maintain your energetic spunk. The question is: How do you take on the responsibilities of life without becoming a stick in the mud? First is to accept the aging process. Gray hairs are sprouting up, wrinkles are surfacing and a late night takes two days to recover from. When I find myself being critical of those things, I vow to love myself right now, because I will continue to change. I might as well enjoy every age for what it is, and accept the gift of perspective that aging gives us. Growing older means the decision-making process shifts from “me” to “we.” It is time to make choices from a space of self-care and awareness. You can still have a fun night out, but you have to keep in mind the possible consequences of your actions. People are less likely to give you a pass for making choices with little or no thought behind them. Maintain your spunk by learning about yourself and what makes you happy. Begin to surround yourself with people and activities that enhance your life. Choose like-minded people who are committed to living life with similar values. The Napa Valley has many different groups you can join that can help you achieve this: a tasting group, a bocce ball team, or a book club. Create fun in what you do every day! You can rock out as you get ready in the morning, allow yourself to get dirty when you garden, or ride your bike to get ice cream. If you can access the pieces of you that look at the world with playfulness and wonder, you will ignite a different perspective on life.
