During the 2012 Olympics, China took home a total of 88 Olympic medals with the U.S. 104. Napa Valley will try to take another record from the Chinese in October when we attempt the Guinness World Record for the longest relay wine toast. Labeled “The Napa Valley Wine Wave,” this history-making event will take place Sunday, October 7, 2012, in the heart of the Napa Valley, St. Helena. The current Guinness World Record for the longest relay wine toast is held by Shenzhen Sinoauwine, in Guangzhou, China, who set the record of 321 participants in November 2011. “Not everyone can compete in the Olympic games, but you can compete in a Guinness World Record attempt,” said St. Helena Mayor, Del Britton. “We invite everyone to come to the Napa Valley and carry on our U.S. tradition by bringing this unique world record to America.” The longest relay wine toast is a sequential toast where participants clink glasses in order, from start to finish, rather than the more com- mon toast where everyone clinks glasses simultaneously. Upon completion of the attempt, an Official Guinness Adjudicator will announce whether the new world record has been set and participants will receive a world record medallion to commemorate the event. The Napa Valley Wine Wave was created by the St. Helena Kiwanis Club, in partnership with the wineries of Appellation St. Helena, CHEERS! St. Helena and the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce, as a way to raise money for scholarships. Proceeds raised from the event will go towards scholarships in the agriculture, viticulture, winemaking, business and hospitality industries.
