White oak wood floors in the living room transition to a flat wool carpet which has the neutral appearance of sisal in the bedrooms. The master bedroom is a soft oasis of blues, grays and white. The color scheme is encapsulated in a painting on the wall, a landscape of hilly trees with fog billowing up, melting into a clear blue sky. “This painting was my first piece of real artwork that put me on the path of buying art,” Elaine tells me. “I tried to get my father to buy it for me, but he said I had to save up for it myself. This was when I was in my early twenties and I had to make twenty-five dollars stretch a week for food!” The bedroom looks pristine, but there is an element of practicality. The linen curtains are lined in Sunbrella, a fabric typically used outdoors to weather the sun. The bedskirt is also Sunbrella fabric: “Super easy to clean,” Elaine tells me. “If it gets smudged, which always happens to bed skirts, you just wipe it off with a cloth.” Mercury lamps sit atop Moroccan-style tables that glisten softly with inlaid pearl. The border on the curtains, a deep Mediterranean blue accent, catches my eye. This color is repeated in the fabrics used on the throw pillows. A blue mohair blanket on top of the bed is a favorite for Houdini, Elaine’s curlyhaired chocolate poodle. Sleeping area of the detached guest cottage Detached from the house is a separate guest cottage. Inside, a small bedroom area feels majestic, with the addition of an Asian screen, which is mounted flat on the wall, serving as a headboard. The bamboo daybed in the sitting room was a score from Craigslist, which Elaine has dressed up with tiger print and ikat pillows. I have to confess the only shoes I saw in Elaine’s home were in the mudroom, and heels were not among these, but after trying to walk around the garden gravel pathways in heels of my own, I realized this might not be the best choice for a country house.
