GOING Green NAPA VALLEY BUSINESS SPOtLIGHT by the Napa County Green Business Program Calistoga Spa Hot Springs Sustainability From vine to bottle, the making of Silverado Vineyards’ exquisite wine depends on the experienced hands of a strong community 52 www.nAPAVA L L E Y L I F Emagaz ine.com The Calistoga Spa Hot Springs recently completed an extensive renovation project that has dramatically transformed the resort through creative interior and exterior enhancements. Located in downtown Calistoga, the 56-room hotel and spa was completely redesigned with a fresh spa-inspired look and feel. During this period of enhancement the opportunity was seized to include Green Building practices, such as installing a system to allow rainwater to return into the ground, recycling and reuse, and responsible purchasing policies. Local craftsmen and labor were utilized and products were produced locally to reduce the carbon footprint of the project. The resort applied for and was granted certification as a Bay Area Green business, and on Earth Day 2013 the Calistoga Spa Hot Springs received the Green Leader – Gold designation from Trip Advisor. Beginning in the fall of 2011, the renovation touched all aspects of the property, including a redesign of the guestrooms with spa-inspired bedding, honed pebble and Italian porcelain tile showers, kitchenettes with microwave ovens and modern conveniences such as full High Definition LED televisions. New climate control systems were added to the guest rooms, proving a 75% reduction in energy use. The focal point of the renovation is the four geothermally-heated mineral pools. The pool deck was fitted with travertine tiles and new pool furniture, and included grape-covered arbor niches. Good wine is about people, from every hand that helps create our Cabernet Sauvignon to every current and future friend who lifts a glass of our wine around the dinner table. We would not be Silverado Vineyards without a strong community, which is why the Miller family, who owns the winery, feels so strongly about being a good neighbor. Of course that starts with how we go about our daily tasks. Our entire estate is sustainably farmed: 15% is farmed organically; 70% is Certified Napa Green; 50% is preserved in the Land Trust exclusively for open space and agriculture use. Our solar panels power 40% of the winery. We are proud of these accomplishments, but they are just the beginning. We know we can and will do better. For us, sustainable is not simply a farming method, it is an approach to all of our activities. It is the driving force behind everything we do to ensure that this winery and estate are here for generations of our customers, neighbors and the Millers to enjoy.
