I have been eating there for twenty years and the consistency has never changed. Always delicious, always fresh and always a line! • Best Advic e “Your sins will always find you out.” Thanks, Grandma, your advice has kept me out of trouble, which I guess is a good thing. • Best Napa Valey view Being a native of Napa Valley, I have seen so many amazing places with views. Napa is so gorgeous year ’round that it is hard to name just one. . . so many incredible vistas! But my favorite view still is the sight of Mt. Veeder looking out the kitchen window of the home of my friends Brian and Lori—just amazing! Makes doing those dishes a hell of a lot better. • Best Workout Opening a bottle of wine and drinking it. That is a workout, isn’t it? No, really, the best workout in Napa is with Kelly Renda at Synergy Fitness Center. She will work your butt off and be so nice about it. • Best lunch spot /picnic spot Napa Valley Olive Oil MFG in St. Helena at the end of Charter Oak Road. Grab some cheese, bread, olives and a bottle of wine. A fantastic lunch under the olive trees. Old-style Napa Valley, nothing like it. Oh, and grab a bottle of olive oil to take home. • Best wat ering hole The bars at Angèle and Oenotri in downtown Napa. Hopefully I will have a drink named after me soon—the Dougie! • Best film My latest new favorite film is “The Great and Powerful Oz.” The 3D effects are incredible, but my all-time favorite film is Michael Goorjian’s movie “Illusion,” starring Kirk Douglas and featuring my best friend Leonora Particelli. A lot of the movie was filmed in St. Helena, my hometown. • Best bok The Velvet Rage, by Alan Downs. It has helped me understand myself in so many different ways. It’s a great book. 80 www.nAPAVA L L E Y L I F Emagaz ine. c om • Best plac e to tak e out-of-town guests I can’t let out my secret spots, you are going to have to take a tour with Beyond The Label to find out. . . but there are so many great places, from private libraries and wine cellars to private ponds in the mountains to go fishing. How about lunch in the middle of a vineyard with a chilled bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, delicious cheeses, bread and great company? • Best thing about the Napa Valey The lifestyle, the restaurants, the climate, the people, the wine. We take it for granted here in the Valley, but we are all so fortunate to live here. I have seen so many great changes in the Napa Valley over the years. I remember, as a kid, going skiing in Tahoe and meeting people who had never heard of St. Helena or Napa, but today, I can go anywhere in the world and mention Napa and they are so impressed. It still makes me laugh every time it happens. featuring doug white Owner Behind the Label Wine Tasting by Sharon Ufberg Photo by Kari Ruel
