health + we l l n e s s ▲ Glamour, poise and style are the first three words that come to mind when I see Karen Caldwell. She has been a customer at Heaven and Earth for many years and always projects elegance, grace and charm, but there’s so much more to her. She is brilliantly talented and smart, as is apparent from the amazing success of her clothing line launched in 2011. Strongly influenced while growing up by her grandmother’s fantasy wardrobe at her Hollywood Hills home as well as a strong background in fine art, she has developed a refined style with a nod to the Golden Age of Hollywood. This time, she says, “…was a time when women embraced glamour, and yet it didn’t compromise their strength. That’s a balance I’ve tried to achieve with my clothing designs.” Glamour WITH STRENGTH Her first priority is full time Mom to her two boys, but she always makes time for skin care at home. She always cleanses her skin at night, finishing with moisturizer, usually Cetaphil cleanser and Hope in a Jar by Philosophy, and doesn’t leave the house without sunscreen. Karen’s quick go-to hairdo is pulling it off the face and neck. “An updo glamorizes anything!” she says. She loves Rene Furterer Okara Active Lights shampoo, conditioner and serum to keep her blond hair radiant, and for styling she prefers the Rene F. Vegetal Mousse. Her trick for all-day lasting lip color is to color the whole lip in lip liner. Brilliant! To finish her polished look she always adds an accessory such as a scarf or earrings. She’s never been formally trained in hair or makeup, yet has styled stars such as Jennifer Newsom for the 2013 Oscars, after she was nominated for Best Documentary. Mrs. Newsom was pregnant and stunning in a gorgeous original red dress by Karen, paired with accessories from Karen’s vintage collection. At special events Karen favors a heavier makeup look for a more dramatic look that translates better in pictures. A self-taught makeup artist, she’s inspired by the ’50s era, which is apparent in her personal style as well as her clothing line.
